Fresh characters often hit a wall just after the campaign. The build still works, but the equipment suddenly feels behind, and every upgrade seems to cost more than expected. This Totem route avoids much of that pressure. You level with a Frost Bow, make the switch at level 52, then carry a campaign-crafted Crossbow into early maps while you build up your POE 2 Currency reserves. It is not a setup that asks for perfect gear on day one. You can keep moving, make sensible upgrades when they appear, and let the Atlas fund the next stage of the character. That matters in a fresh league, especially when useful bases and strong rares are still expensive. The playstyle is also fairly forgiving. Drop your Totems, keep your distance, and use movement rather than standing still and hoping your defences hold.
Use the Frost Bow Through the Campaign
The early game is smoother with the PMA Frost Bow and Fragmentation. It gives you reliable damage without turning every pack into a long fight, and the skill setup is easy to maintain while you are unlocking the rest of the character. Aim for weapon improvements near levels 16 and 33. Those are good moments to check your damage, replace an outdated bow or Crossbow, and move on. There is no need to stop for hours looking for a perfect item. Ritual encounters can help here, too. Run them when they sit naturally along your route, rather than treating them as a separate farming session. They may provide a useful rare around levels 16, 33, or 50, but the main goal remains campaign progress. Keep your resistances in reasonable shape, upgrade your main weapon when damage drops, and save most of your resources for the Totem transition. Spending everything before level 52 usually leaves you with less room to improve when maps begin.
Make the Level 52 Switch Carefully
At level 52, move into the Totem setup. The change brings better area coverage and strong single-target pressure, while the Totems take much of the direct pressure away from your character. You will still need to move, of course. Dodge rolling matters, and careless positioning can punish a character that looks tougher on paper than it really is. The nice part is that you do not need a full collection of expensive items to finish the campaign with this setup. Your existing gear can often stay in place while the new skill arrangement does the heavy lifting. Before entering maps, check the basics: capped elemental resistances, a usable life pool, and enough Energy Shield or Armour to soften ordinary hits. Do not chase every damage modifier straight away. A character that clears quickly but dies twice in a map is not progressing quickly. Get the core defences in order, then spend on damage.
Keep the Campaign Crossbow and Build the Atlas
A campaign-crafted level 59 Crossbow can carry this character much farther than many players expect. It has already been taken into T14 maps with most of the surrounding equipment left almost untouched. That gives you time to learn the build and earn better rewards before replacing several slots at once. Once mapping starts, focus on Atlas progress and Waystone supply. Reach the campsite, pick up Mighty Prey, and work towards the relevant Great Beast and Fortress routes. Nodes that improve Waystone quantity deserve early attention, particularly those tied to map bosses. If your map pool dries up, strong damage will not solve the problem. Bosses are worth prioritising because they provide useful progression rewards and can be handled quickly by a well-played Totem character. You do not need to clear every side encounter in every map. Move with purpose, take the boss rewards, and return to optional content after your map supply feels dependable.
Upgrade the Weapon Before Chasing Luxury Gear
The first serious upgrade should usually be the Crossbow. Start with a base that has a strong percentage of physical damage, then use the appropriate Jawbone, Omens, and Greater Essence to shape the item. Leave room for the modifiers you actually want instead of filling every slot too early. The crafting process is easier to manage when you treat each step as a budget decision. A Greater Exalted Orb or another slam can improve the unfinished affixes, while quality and a visit to the Well of Souls help complete the weapon. The key target is the guaranteed +1 Totem modifier. It gives the build a noticeable lift and can remain useful well into higher maps. A +2 weapon is a longer-term project, not an entry requirement. Around T11, start putting money aside for a stronger Crossbow. One or two Divine Orbs can be enough to make a meaningful jump towards T15 and T16, provided your resistances and basic defences are already in place.
Final Thoughts
This progression works because it respects the way a fresh economy actually feels. You level with the Frost Bow, switch at 52, and let a modest Totem setup handle the early Atlas. Essence is a sensible specialisation once Waystone supply is stable, though Ritual, Rogue Exiles, and Abyss can suit different tastes and markets. Avoid spreading your Atlas points across everything at once. Establish map sustain first, then choose the content you enjoy and can clear efficiently. When the character reaches T11, improve the Crossbow before rebuilding every other slot. That single decision often does more for map speed than several small upgrades. Keep moving, upgrade when a real weakness appears, and use path of exile 2 trade as a way to compare sensible purchases rather than empty your resources on fashionable gear. With that approach, T16 becomes a practical goal instead of a costly rebuild.
